{"id":6,"date":"2024-02-05T20:59:07","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T20:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sc.devsimplify.com\/blog\/?p=6"},"modified":"2026-09-21T21:04:52","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T21:04:52","slug":"the-rising-tide-of-pharmacy-burnout-and-how-to-turn-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/suncrestsolutions.com\/blog\/the-rising-tide-of-pharmacy-burnout-and-how-to-turn-it\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rising Tide of Pharmacy Burnout\u2014and How to Turn It Around."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an era of growing demands on healthcare professionals, <strong>pharmacy burnout<\/strong> is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacytimes.com\/view\/pharmacists-report-high-levels-of-burnout-resulting-in-understaffing-and-alternative-career-paths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Pharmacy Times<\/em> Burnout and Mental Health Survey<\/a>, 194 pharmacists reported an average burnout score of 5.89 out of 7.<\/p>\n<p>The survey identified five leading contributors to burnout:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Workload (21.7%)<\/li>\n<li>Work-life balance (16.1%)<\/li>\n<li>Challenging or unreasonable performance metrics (15.2%)<\/li>\n<li>Management (14.3%)<\/li>\n<li>High patient and prescription volumes (13.1%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"font-size:clamp(26px, 4vw, 34px); line-height:1.2; margin:32px 0 16px;\">The Impact of Pharmacy Burnout<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.uic.edu\/news-stories\/startling-realities-pharmacist-burnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Illinois Chicago<\/a> have highlighted several organizational consequences associated with pharmacist burnout, including medical errors, patient harm, strained working relationships and lower patient satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, pharmacist burnout does not affect employees alone. Its effects can extend throughout the pharmacy and ultimately reach the patients it serves.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Pharmacy Times<\/em> survey also found that 52.6% of respondents said their employer had not taken measures to improve workplace conditions. Another 40.7% said efforts had been made but had not been effective.<\/p>\n<p>So, how can pharmacy leaders create meaningful change? A good place to start is by addressing two major contributors to burnout: poor work-life balance and work overload.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size:clamp(26px, 4vw, 34px); line-height:1.2; margin:32px 0 16px;\">Support a Healthier Work-Life Balance<\/h2>\n<p>Pharmacy leaders can take a proactive approach by investing in the well-being of both themselves and their teams.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size:clamp(21px, 3vw, 26px); line-height:1.25; margin:26px 0 10px;\">Ask for Employee Feedback<\/h3>\n<p>Regularly ask employees whether current work-life balance initiatives are helping. Be willing to adjust those efforts based on what your team shares.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size:clamp(21px, 3vw, 26px); line-height:1.25; margin:26px 0 10px;\">Provide Mental Health Support<\/h3>\n<p>Offer access to mental health resources when possible. Counseling services, employee assistance programs and stress-management resources can provide valuable support.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size:clamp(21px, 3vw, 26px); line-height:1.25; margin:26px 0 10px;\">Recognize and Reward Employees<\/h3>\n<p>Regularly acknowledge employees\u2019 hard work and accomplishments. Just as importantly, respect their time away by avoiding work-related calls and messages whenever possible.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size:clamp(21px, 3vw, 26px); line-height:1.25; margin:26px 0 10px;\">Strengthen Team Relationships<\/h3>\n<p>Create opportunities for team members to connect, improve collaboration and make the workplace more enjoyable. Even simple gestures can demonstrate that employees and their contributions are valued.<\/p>\n<p>Begin with actions you can implement immediately, then build from there. These measures demonstrate a genuine commitment to creating a healthier workplace.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size:clamp(26px, 4vw, 34px); line-height:1.2; margin:32px 0 16px;\">Reduce Work Overload Through Better Systems<\/h2>\n<p>Supporting employees is important, but appreciation alone cannot solve an unmanageable workload.
